Practical tips and tools for homeschooling
This resource includes 12 monthly seasonal planning guides that you can add to your home school planner. You can complete all of the guides at once or over time as this fits into your planning schedule. After completing the guides, you will be prepared to add seasonal learning activities and community engagement opportunities into your children's home school experience.
Grade Level(s):
These seasonal planning guides are designed to be used with home school children in all grade levels.
Why to Use:
Use these seasonal planning guides to curate a home school experience that includes seasonal celebrations, acknowledgements, and traditions each month. You can also use them to add variety and spontaneity to each month, with ample opportunities for community connections.
How to Use:
These seasonal planning guides are designed to be added to your home school planner as a supplemental resource to assist with your planning throughout the home school year. Start by listing the holidays that you celebrate each month, holidays celebrated by other cultures of interest, seasonal and natural events (e.g., Fall Equinox), birthdays, school traditions, and any other unique events during the month that are important to your family.
Then, for each event, list possible learning experiences in the tables provided. This is a time for creative ideas–don’t limit yourself to what is practical or feasible at this stage. For example, if it is a dream to travel to another country to experience another culture’s holiday traditions, write this down. You may come across a way to make that happen or get closer to it (e.g., engaging with someone in your local community who is willing to share information about their holiday traditions).
Additionally, not all seasonal events need to be acknowledged as part of home school. Some events will be a better fit for acknowledging outside of home school. For example, if your child wants to learn pottery to create gifts, you can align this with a home school learning experience. On the other hand, if your child wants to make birthday gifts using a well-developed skill, this is better suited to an afterschool or weekend activity.
When to Use:
Use these seasonal planning guides when you are ready to start anchoring your home school experience with a well-defined monthly plan or when you want to engage more in your community. Accounting for the unique features of each month will help connect your children with the world around them and provide a model for them to engage with others through common traditions and rituals.
Parent-Educator Tips:
These seasonal planning guides are designed to take about 60 minutes to complete all at once, but you can also work on them for a few minutes at a time. You can also add to your lists throughout the year as you come across new events and think of new learning experiences. This is an opportunity to be creative and open to possibilities.
There will be more events than possible to experience to their fullest. The goal isn't to create too much to do or to overwhelm you, but rather to create a steady stream of ideas that you can pull into your weekly and daily routines. Incorporating learning experiences based around seasonal events adds fun and novelty to your children’s home school experience.
